Why Ziggy Marley Got His 8th GRAMMY

By Benn-i on Feb 14, 2017 in Blog , Interview , Music , Reggae , Riddims - 0 Comments

In one of my latest post I already announced that the 59th Annual Grammy Awards nominees have been released (New Reggae Instrumentals for January 2017). The Award ceremony was held on February 17, 2017 in Los Angeles @ Staples Center. The Grammy is an honor awarded by The Recording Academy to recognize outstanding achievements in the mainly English-language music industry.

The Grammy award for Best Reggae Album was instituted into the awards in 1985. In that year Black Uhuru walked away with the award for their work on the album titled “Anthem”. Since then more artists and acts followed like; Jimmy Cliff, Steel Pulse, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Shabba Ranks, Inner Circle, Shaggy and more.

But the one with the most Grammy Awards is 8-time award winner Ziggy Marley (Born David Nesta “Ziggy” Marley, son of reggae icon Bob Marley)…..

And the Reggae Grammy Award 2017 goes to….

The Grammy Award winner in the category BEST REGGAE ALBUM is Ziggy Marley for his self titled album!

Congratulations!

Best Reggae Album Nominees 2017

Next to Ziggy Marley the following artists have been nominated for the Best Reggae Album

Devin Di Dakta & JL – Reggae for Her

Reggae for Her - Grammy NomineeSly & Robbie with Devin Di Dakta & J.L – Reggae for Her

Label: Tuff Gong International, Taxi Records

Funny fact is that Devin and JL are also the youngest reggae artists to be nominated for a Grammy!

Both Devin Di Dakta and JL are managed by Shelly-Ann Curran, who spoke to Loop News earlier today: “I am elated that Devin Di Dakta and JL’s collaboration with the legendary Sly & Robbie has been recognized. Both men are the youngest [entertainers] to be nominated in the Grammy’s ‘Best Reggae Album’ [category]. This nomination is very special considering that both Devin Di Dakta and JL’s songs are never played on Jamaican radio. It shows that good music speaks for itself.

Who are Sly and Robbie?

Sly and Robbie are a prolific Jamaican rhythm sections and production duo, associated primarily with reggae and dub genres. Drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Robbie Shakespeare teamed up in the mid-1970s after establishing themselves separately in Jamaica as professional musicians. Sly and Robbie are estimated to have played on or produced 200,000 recordings, many of them on their own label, Taxi Records.

J. Boog – Rose Petals

Rose Petals by JBoogJ. Boog was also nominated with his album “Rose Petals” released by label: Wash House Music Group. Who is J.Boog? A singer who fuses reggae with R&B, hip-hop, and rock, J Boog is the stage name of Jerry Afemata, who was born in Long Beach, California but primarily raised in Compton. Of Samoan ancestry (his father was a tribal chief in his neighborhood), Boog’s first influence was his sister, who sang and played piano. When she got a book of Bob Marley’s classic songs, Boog began singing along, and when he was nine, the two performed a cover of Whitney Houston’s “One Moment in Time” at a family reunion, in front of an audience of 200. Raised on an eclectic musical diet of classic reggae, West Coast hip-hop, vintage R&B, and a dash of hard rock, Boog gravitated to the laid-back attitude but taut grooves of reggae, and he began writing and recording his own tunes during downtime from his job at an oil refinery.

The album Rose Petals features great artists like: Chaka Demus, Stephen Marley, Snoop Dogg

2 months ago J. Boog also released his new album called “Wash House Ting”. This album also features some tracks from Rose Petals and features guest appearances from artists like: Lion Fiyah, Gappy Ranks, Aarahdna, Tenelle and Chaka Demus.
